The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of the Philippines have a longstanding history of robust diplomatic and bilateral labor relations, particularly concerning the welfare and protection of Filipino workers in the UAE. Here’s a summary of the recent developments:

Strengthening Bilateral Relations:

Minister Abdulrahman Al Awar, Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation of the UAE, and Officer-in-Charge Atty. Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Department of Migrant Workers of the Philippines, along with Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, H.E. Alfonso Ferdinand A. Ver, convened in Dubai on December 1, 2023, during the COP28 Conference, to reinforce the countries’ bilateral labor ties.

Joint Committee Meeting:

The officials agreed to convene a Joint Committee Meeting in the near future to deliberate on areas of collaboration and devise strategies that align with the mutual interests of both nations, fostering a cohesive partnership in labor management and protection.

Invitation to Abu Dhabi Dialogue 2024:

DMW OIC Cacdac received an invitation to the Abu Dhabi Dialogue 2024, scheduled for February, underscoring the importance of continuous dialogue and engagement between the two countries to address pertinent issues and enhance cooperation.

UAE Savings System and Policy Updates:

Minister Al Awar highlighted the new UAE savings system that empowers Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to invest their end-of-service benefits in established portfolios, thereby augmenting their financial security. Additionally, updates on the UAE’s new policy concerning unemployment benefits were discussed, reflecting the nation’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of foreign workers.

Assurance and Commitment:

Minister Al Awar reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to fostering a favorable environment for OFWs, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to upholding labor rights and ensuring the well-being of foreign workers. In response, OIC Cacdac expressed gratitude for the UAE’s support and pledged to maintain active engagement with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) to advance the interests of OFWs.
