DMW launches Japan Desk in Tokyo and Osaka

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has officially inaugurated its Japan Employment Facilitation Desk (Japan Desk) in Tokyo and Osaka, marking a significant advancement in the bilateral labor relations between the Philippines and Japan. Here’s a summary of the key developments:

Launch of Japan Desk:

The Japan Desk, a specialized unit under the DMW, aims to enhance and streamline the deployment process of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to Japan, a pivotal labor market for the Philippines.

Strengthening Bilateral Partnership:

DMW Officer-in-Charge Hans Leo J. Cacdac emphasized the robust labor market partnership between the Philippines and Japan, underscoring the commitment to facilitating safe, stable, and lucrative employment opportunities for Filipino workers in Japan.

Responsibilities of Japan Desk:

The Japan Desk will oversee the deployment and repatriation of OFWs in Japan, ensure adherence to prescribed timelines for Japanese documentation and processes, serve as the primary unit for addressing Japan-related concerns, and recommend rewards and incentives for Japanese employers and licensed recruitment agencies.

Historic Milestone:

The establishment of the Japan Desk signifies a landmark development in Philippine overseas employment initiatives, being the first dedicated unit focusing solely on the processes and services related to a single host country for OFWs.

Fulfillment of Commitments:

The creation of the Japan Desk fulfills a commitment made by the late Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople in February 2023 during President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s visit, reflecting the dedication to enhancing the welfare and protection of Filipino workers abroad.

Leadership and Legacy:

Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne “PY” M. Caunan, who will lead the Japan Desk, acknowledged Secretary Ople’s unwavering commitment to Filipino workers and expressed her dedication to upholding and advancing the legacy by ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the desk.

Support and Collaboration:

The launch of the Japan Desk has garnered support from Japanese government agencies, business organizations, Filipino community leaders, and workers, reflecting the collaborative efforts and shared vision to promote mutual prosperity and welfare.

Current Filipino Workers in Japan:

According to Japan’s Ministry of Justice data from July 2023, there are 61,766 registered Filipino workers in Japan, engaged in various sectors, including construction, manufacturing, care work, and professional roles, underlining the significance of the Japanese market for Filipino labor mobility.

In summary, the inauguration of the Japan Desk symbolizes a new chapter in the Philippines-Japan labor relations, fostering collaboration, efficiency, and commitment to the welfare and advancement of Filipino workers in Japan through dedicated initiatives and partnerships.
